Situated 15 minutes from Angers and 5 minutes from Le Lion-d'Angers, the village of Grez-Neuville is a charming village on the banks of the River Mayenne.
This double municipality, straddling the Mayenne river, was created by the amalgamation of Neuville, dating back to the 9th century, and Grez, whose existence is attested to as far back as the 11th century.
On the right bank, the church of Saint-Martin-de-Vertou was built in the 12th century from sandstone rubble known as "pierres de Roussard". Opposite, on the other bank, the large mill with its fortress-like appearance dominates the dam and the river. It bears witness to the presence of numerous oil and flour mills on the island. Until 1955, when it ceased to operate, it housed a dairy. To find out more about the history of the commune, visit the various stations on the interpretation trail or use the Baludik app.
Today, the Quai de l'Hirondelle is home to houseboats offered for hire by Anjou Navigation, as well as a cruise boat, the Hirondelle. Walkers, cyclists and horse riders have not been forgotten! The Vélo Francette - a national cycle route linking Ouistreham to La Rochelle - allows them to discover the peaceful banks of the Mayenne.
