Here's a surprising little haven of peace dug into the soft, luminous tufa stone 8 minutes from Saumur for an amazing underground getaway in Le Coudray-Macouard. Welcome to the Logis des Roches d'Antan, troglodytic bed and breakfast!
The hillock of Le Coudray-Macouard has many caves. In the rue de l'église, Sophie Juin welcomes you to her semi-troglodytic guest rooms, on the ground floor of a 19th century building, sheltered from prying eyes.
If you're a fan of authentic places to live in unusual surroundings, then this little corner of paradise is just for you!
The rooms are named after essential Loire Valley materials: slate, tuffeau and falun. Their contrasts contribute to the colour of the light, and their uses are ubiquitous in the Saumur region.
The three large shower rooms, with showers and toilets, are in the troglodytic part of the house. The bedrooms are not troglodytic.
The 'slate room' for two has a lot of charm, with the natural light reflected by the tufa stone walls, making it a cosy place to stay. In the bedroom, discover the old tufa "potager", ancestor of the stove (the owner will tell you the story). Sleeps 2 x 90 or 1 x 180.
The "tufa room", with its soft, subtle colours, is perfect for lovers. With its large bay windows and high ceilings, you'll be able to relax in peace and quiet, far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
These two rooms are communicating and can be rented together.
The two-room "falun" suite can accommodate two, three or four people. This atypical suite features an old bread oven at the entrance to the first room: a pleasant sitting room or bedroom sleeping 2 (BZ size 140 beds). The master bedroom has a four-poster bed built into the rock, with direct access to the troglodytic shower room.
On sunny days, you can enjoy the terrace in the garden. The tufa rock has an extraordinary mineral composition and is home to a rich variety of fauna; the house garden is a fine example of this: lupins, fleur-de-lys, daffodils and hollyhocks enchant the view with their colours. Sophie does her utmost to preserve this magical place, which is why she shares the values of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park.
Don't miss her home-cooked breakfasts made with local produce, served in the garden or in a large separate room in the troglodyte, complete with wood-burning stove and fireplace. This room is open all day long, so you can make the most of the books, games and information available, as well as the fridge, microwave and kettle.
Enjoy your stay in the Loire Valley, in the heart of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park!
