The tomb of the Vendée general Charles de Bonchamps, illustrious leader of the Vendée Wars, created by David d'Angers, was installed in July 1825 in the abbey church of Saint-Florent-le-Vieil. 200 years later, the town of Mauges-sur-Loire is paying tribute to the soldier and the artist with 3 days of festivities! In creating the tomb of General Bonchamps, David d'Angers immortalised an important act of forgiveness and produced one of his first masterpieces. This presentation will look at the work from an artistic angle, reconstructing the creative process and placing it in the context of the history of sculpture in the 19th century. by Fabrice Rubiella, curator at the Galerie David d'Angers.
