Between La Pommeraye and Montjean-sur-Loire, the "Des Fours aux Moulins" trail offers a 15.2-kilometre loop. The trail, which lasts around 4 hours, links the agricultural plateau of the Mauges to the banks of the Loire, offering a diversity of landscapes and historical evidence.
A journey between industry and agriculture
The route begins at La Pommeraye, a commune whose development was marked by its agricultural vocation and the establishment of the Sœurs de la Providence congregation in the 19th century. As you walk along the hillsides, you'll come across old windmills, reminders of the cereal-growing industry that once dominated this area of hedged farmland.
The trail then descends towards Montjean-sur-Loire. This village, once a major river port, bears witness to a rich industrial past. Limestone and coal mining have left their mark here, notably the monumental lime kilns that line the river. Local history here is inextricably linked with the Loire, which was used to transport lime, hemp and building materials.
Nature and biodiversity
The route follows traditional sunken lanes lined with hedges that mark the boundaries of vineyards and pastureland. As you reach the banks of the Loire, the environment changes, giving way to alluvial vegetation. The wetlands and sandy shores are home to specific flora and numerous species of migratory birds.
The topography offers views over the Loire valley without presenting any major technical difficulties. The transition between wooded areas, vineyards and the banks of the Loire ensures a walk punctuated by a variety of atmospheres.
