In the heart of the Mauges, the Biches au Puiset-Doré walk is a 12-kilometre loop. This forest and farm trail offers a direct insight into the Mauges region: Leppo forest, sunken lanes, through fields, along streams... ideal for spotting roe deer!
A heritage linked to land and rail
The soil of Puiset-Doré is marked by large deposits of clay. This resource has fuelled the pottery industry since the 15th century. As you walk along, you'll come across areas where clay was once mined, now transformed into ponds. The trail also follows the route of the old "Petit Anjou" railway. Until 1948, this train linked rural communities to urban centres. The industrial heritage now blends into the green landscape.
Forest fauna and moorland flora
The trail owes its name to the frequent presence of large deer. Hinds and roe deer occupy the oak and chestnut forests. Look out for their tracks along the dirt paths. The flora varies according to soil moisture. Dry areas are home to broom and heather moorland. Near the river Verret, the vegetation becomes denser and fresher. This protected environment is a nesting ground for many species of birds.
An economy of orchards and vineyards
Local agricultural activity shapes the skyline of Puiset-Doré. The area is renowned for its production of red berries. Rows of raspberry and blackcurrant bushes dot the plateaux. Vineyards also occupy the well-exposed slopes. Winegrowers produce Sauvignon and Muscadet wines. This mixed farming ensures a varied landscape throughout the year.
The route is recommended by the Ôsez Mauges tourist office.
