Take a step back in time to the Neolithic era with the largest menhir in Anjou.
After your walk around the pond at St Macaire en Mauges, take a closer look at this menhir dating from the Neolithic period between Nantes and Cholet.
Standing 6.20 metres high, this stone has stood the test of time. Made of Aubiers granite, this menhir is the highest in the Maine et Loire department. Crosses and coats of arms are engraved on the surface. At certain times of the day, you can make out snake shapes on the side of the five-and-a-half-metre-long stone.
Many legends surround this stone: legend has it that a fairy had to carry a stone to the other side of the valley before midnight. She would then be able to marry a young man. Unfortunately, she failed and dropped the stone.
