Château de Vaux

At the crossroads of the Mayenne and Sarthe rivers, in Miré in Anjou, Château de Vaux was built in the 15th century. It was the first home of Jean Bourré (minister of Louis XI).

Château de Vaux, built between 1464 and 1468, was the first residence built by Jean Bourré, an influential adviser and close associate of Louis XI. Lord of the Plessis, Jean Bourré left a lasting mark on the architectural landscape of Anjou, subsequently building other major châteaux, including Château du Plessis-Bourré, Château de Langeais and Château de Jarzé.
Today, Château de Vaux is one of the rare examples of pre-Renaissance architecture in Anjou. It illustrates a pivotal period between the medieval fortress and the prestigious residence open to new artistic influences. Through its layout, its volumes and its history, the building bears witness to the social and political rise of its patron.
This monument offers a valuable insight into the architectural evolution of the late 15th century and the role played by the great servants of the kingdom in the embellishment of the Anjou region.
