Located near the sanctuary of Notre-Dame du Marillais, the Champs des Martyrs is a peaceful spot on the banks of the Loire which commemorates the Vendée fussillade during the Terror.
During the period of the Terror from 1793 to 1794, the military Vendée paid a high price for its uprising and the Mauges and Saint-Florent-le-Vieil did not escape.
During the winter of 1793-1794, around 2,000 men, women and children were locked up in the abbey and then shot in the Champs des Martyrs, at the foot of Mont Glonne, or drowned in the Loire.
In memory of this massacre, a commemorative altar has stood in the Champs des Martyrs since 1953, at the foot of which the victims' bones have been collected. Stained glass windows in the Notre-Dame-du-Marillais church also commemorate the event.
Accessible from the Promenade Julien Gracq, the Champs des Martyrs will give you the opportunity to learn a little more about local history while discovering the natural heritage of the Loire.
