You probably know the Château de Brézé for its architecture, its deep moat and its history, but do you know about its famous wines? Then set off to discover the Château de Brézé vineyard and its philosophy.
Wine production at Château de Brézé dates back to the 15th century. The grapes were pressed in the famous press room and matured in the barrel room in the Château's underground cellars until 1976!
The old troglodytic wine presses bear witness to the ancestral production of the estate's wines, which were so much appreciated by King René d'Anjou and the great poet Joachim de Bellay, who dedicated these verses to them: "Son Nectar nous assaisonne, Nectar nous le donne, Mon doux vignoble Brézéen ... ".
The white wines of Brézé made the reputation of this vineyard and were subsequently favoured by the kings of the greatest European courts. Count Bernard De Colbert and his wife Charlotte De Dreux Brézé have continued this historic family tradition. His son Jean and daughter-in-law Karine De Colbert now produce Saumur and Saumur-Champigny appellation wines, to the delight of lovers of fine Anjou wines.
The Château de Brézé estate produces its wines on a site steeped in history, in the heart of the Saumur region.
The Château's vineyards cover around 10 hectares, planted with Chenin for the white wines and Cabernet Franc for the reds. It produces Saumur Rosé, Saumur Blanc, Saumur-Champigny and Crémant de Loire. The Château's viticulture and winemaking techniques are based on sustainability and respect for the environment.
The soil is worked to a shallow depth so as not to alter its horizons. No chemical weedkillers are used.
Depending on the terroir, grass may be planted in every other row or on the entire plot. The aim is to maintain biodiversity in the vineyard, to improve the balance and health of the plant.
This philosophy enables them to get the best out of their vines, allowing them to develop in a balanced, healthy ecosystem.
"Good grapes make good wine!
This philosophy is also reflected in the cellar, where he seeks to retain all the authenticity of our terroirs. He limits the amount of work they do in the cellar, to preserve the integrity of their grapes and wines.
Numerous events and wine-tourism activities are on offer throughout the year.
